Assessment of radiological impact on the marine organisms near Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant

As we improve our knowledge on radiation protection, we are more interested in the impact of radiation on biota in the surroundings. By applying the method from the ERICA (Environmental Risk from Ionising Contaminants: Assessment and Management) project, the authors are to make some prediction and assessment of radiological impact on the marine organisms near Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The results show the radiation dose rates of the marine organisms arising from the NPP’s liquid radioactive effluents are no more than 7.47×10–3µGy8226;h–1, much lower than both the limits recommended by the regulatory and the background radiation dose rates. Therefore, we estimate that this NPP would not cause adverse radiological impact on the marine organisms in its surroundings during its normal operation.
