Influence of man-made island construction on the stability of the beach in the west coast of Haikou Bay

Abstract

Man-made island is a new form of ocean engineering. Great attention has been paid to the problem of depositing and eroding caused by such construction. By computing and analogy, we analyzed the effect to stability of the beach in the west coast of Haikou Bay due to the construction of a man-made island using an example of south-sea-bright-pearl man-made island, and proposed some protection measures. The related study and engineering cases indicated that the opposite beach would universally form prominent shoreline like a tongue, but the two side beaches would erode. We should take some engineering measures, such as supplying sand to the beach, to control and recover the eroded beach.
