Abstract:

At present, most studies concerning Scartelaos virids are focused on the development of embryo and young fish. Observation on the ovary sections in different stages of Scartelaos virids from Zhanjing sea area was undertaken. The ovaries begin to develop greatly in March. Most of the ovaries reach Stage IV and Stage V respectively from April to June, the spawning seasons of Scartelaos virids with highest monthly average of mature coefficient. In October the ovaries develop into Stage II and remain in this stage from October to the following February. It is found that they spawn once in each reproductive season. In the course of fast development of oocyte of Scartelaos virids, the nucleus increase in volume more markedly than the cytoplasm during a small growth stage. With the accumulation of yolk substances, the volume of the cytoplasm increases rapidly with a correspondingly sharp drop in the nuclear-plasma ratio, and it reaches to a minimum ratio as the oocyte becomes full maturity. The structure of the egg chorine surface, translucency and reproductive behaviors of Scartelaos virids were also discussed in this paper.
