Abstract: H. E, Mallory, Heidenhain-Azan and Jafri staining methods and electron microscopy technique were used to investigate the histology and ultrastructure of pituitary gland of female Verasper moseri. The results show that the pituitary of Verasper moseri belongs to dorsoventral style, which consists of two parts: neurohypophysis and adenohypophysis. Neurosecretory fibres were found in Neurohypophysis, and two kinds of pituicytes were recognized in the neurohypophysial tissue in addition to two kinds of neuroepithelial cells. The adenohypophysis was divided into rostral pars distal, proximal pars distal and pars intermedia. Six types of hormone secretory cells were found in adenohypophysis. Prolactin hormone (PROL) cell, adrenocorticotopic hormone (ACTH) cell and thyrotropic hormone (TSH) cell were identified in rostral pars distal. The proximal pars distal expressed three types of hormone secretory cells: growth hormone (GH) cell, gonadotropin hormone (GtH) cell and thyrotropic (TSH) cell. The pars intermedia consisted of melanotropic stimulating hormone (MSH) cell. One type of gonadotropin hormone (GtH) cell was found in the pituitary of matured female Verasper moseri, wherein two types of secreted granules existed. In addition, the characteristics of other cells in the pituitary were discussed. The present study has provided new data for the study of endocrinology in flatfish, and is important reference for the breed of Verasper moseri.
