Abstract:

Based on remotely sensed sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface height (SSH) data, the authors constructed temperature and salinity on three-dimensional grids in the South China Sea (SCS). The construction involved statistic analysis and data assimilation. Independent validations of the constructed temperature and salinity against in situ data revealed that the constructed temperature and salinity agree well with the in situ observations. For routine operations, a dynamically constructed three-dimensional temperature and salinity system was developed based on MATLAB. By interacting with a simple interface, the near real-time temperature and salinity in each standard layer can be retrieved and viewed on a 1/4-degree resolution in the SCS. In addition, other ocean environment parameters, such as mixed layer depth, water density and velocity of sound can also be provided by this system for further analysis and visualization.
